BACK TO SCHOOL
Welcome back to school and a special
welcome to all the new children (and
parents) starting St.Mary’s for the
first time. We hope they all enjoy
their time here.
Why not come along and join us on
Tuesday when Fr Peter celebrates
our Start of Year Mass in St Mary’s
Chapel. The service will begin at
9.30am and all parents are
especially welcome..

REMINDERS:
School is intended to be a happy and
secure place for a child to be
educated in. The following should
encourage this:
The school has a discipline policy.
This policy expresses the
responsibilities imposed on pupils.
parents and staff for good
discipline and safety in and around
the school. A system of
rewards and sanctions is in place to
help
make this
policy work. We operate an “open
door” policy. However, any parent
wishing to speak to a member of
staff about a serious issue should
do so by appointment. If a pupil is
absent or ill a letter/phone call
is required from a parent or
guardian.

MILK:
Milk now costs 10p a day and must be
ordered on Friday for the week ahead.
TESCO
VOUCHERS;
We are collecting
Tesco vouchers.
NEWRY HOSPICE:
The children will
have boxes sent home with them to
collect loose change over a period
of a couple of weeks
Spring Bulbs
If
anyone has any spare flower bulbs
the school will be delighted to have
them.
CLUBS:
After school clubs will begin on
week beginning 17th
September for P4-P7children.
Netball and Football will run on
Mondays ,and Orchestra will be on
Wednesdays. The attendance has
dropped in recent years. Please
encourage your child to attend these
sessions
LEARNING SPANISH: Our P6 children will have the opportunity to learn Spanish this year
during a project organized by Shimna
College. The children will be
learning with children from other
local primary schools and will take
place in the primary schools
involved.
Parents will also have the
opportunity of learning some
conversational Spanish in an evening
class which will run over six weeks
in the autumn term

HEALTHY EATING
BREAKTIMES :
Television and media are all
highlighting the importance of a
healthy lifestyle.The Government
has now put in force regulations
which determines what foodstuffs
children should have access to in
school.
At
Saint Mary’s we have had a Healthy
Eating at Break time policy for a
number of years and indeed we were
presented with out certificate
during the summer. As a short
reminder our Healthy Eating at Break
time policy is as follows.
Healthy Eating at Break times will
take place 5 Days per week in St
Mary’s. Children may eat fresh
fruit, vegetables, cheese or a
healthy sandwich.
Please do not send in any of the
following for break time
biscuits/crisps/yoghurt/cakes/nuts/chocolate/bars/cream
crackers/pancakes/yoghurt drinks etc
Milk and Water are the only drinks
allowed.
Many thanks for your co-operation in
this matter. This only applies to
break times and shall begin on
Wednesday of this week.
MINIBUS
ARRANGEMENTS
Many thanks to Patsy, Mairin,
Kathleen and Glasdrumman GAC for
their role in this unique service.
The arrangements are the same as
last year
VIOLIN LESSONS
There are some places available for
P4 children to avail of violin
instruction. There will be a nominal
charge. Letters will be sent home
shortly.
SWIMMING
Swimming begins on Thursday morning
for P4/P5 in Kilkeel. Swimming costs
£1. The lessons will continue for 15
weeks. Please make sure the children
have the correct costume and towel.
The children will not require any
other money.
Pupil Records We shall be
sending data collection sheets
regarding mobile numbers, medical
information, permission for trips
and internet use. Please complete
and return as soon as possible.

EMU TRIPS
Due to a decrease in funding we are
asking each family to make a
voluntary contribution of £5 per
year to allow us to maintain the
excellent program of educational
trips that our children enjoy over
the school year. A letter shall be
sent out shortly to that effect.
UNIFORM
Everyone looked very smart on
Wednesday in their new uniform.
Please make sure that children’s
have their names on all items of
clothing.
GUITAR LESSONS:
P5-P7 children have the opportunity
of learning the guitar this year.
Further information shall be sent
out next
week.
WATER:
It is well know n
that water is good for you and also
aids concentration. Please make sure
that your child has a fresh, clean
water bottle so that they may access
the fresh cool water that is
available for them at all times
