SUMMER 2005 NEWSLETTER
The
staff of the school would like to
thank you all for your support and
co-operation throughout the year.
It is greatly appreciated.

encourage your children to keep
reading throughout the summer.
Libraries have organised a number of
events and activities to encourage
reading throughout the summer.
FOOTBALL/NETBALL/HURLING:
Congratulations to the football and
netball teams who played very well
in the recent St Columban’s
Tournament. Congratulations to the
hurling team who finished third in
their tournament. They did beat the
eventful winners St Mary’s
Newcastle in the earlier rounds.
TRIPS:
The
younger children enjoyed an
interesting trip to the beach with
the children from Newcastle PS.. P7
enjoyed their final trip to
Dundonald Ice Bowl on Wednesday
last.
REPORTS:
The
children's’ annual Record of
Achievement will be handed out on
Friday 24th June . Please contact
the school if you have any queries
regarding your child’s progress.
MIST Programme:
Well
done to the parents who recently
completed the MIST programme. We
appreciate their commitment to their
children's education. Many thanks to
Miss Walsh for her organisation of
this programme.
Gaelic League:
The
local group have organised a
programme of sporting activities,
trips and Irish classes from the 4th
to8th July in the Longstone Hall.
The older children have all received
letters but further information can
be had in school. Please support
this initiative.
MINIBUS:
A
sincere thank you to all of the
minibus drivers and Glasdrumman GAC
who provide such an unique service
to the school. If anyone is
interested in driving the bus as
part of the morning run rota please
contact the school. There is also an
important letter and short
questionnaire regarding the use of
the minibus . Please return this
as soon as possible.
SPORTS DAY:Thank you to
everyone for the good turnout of
parents and visitors last week The
children all enjoyed themselves and
will receive their prizes on Friday.
Thank you to everyone who helped to
tidy up afterwards.
FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL.

purchase of the Sports day medals
and their generous donation for the
P7 trip.

A reminder that P3 finish school at
2pm during the autumn and spring
terms. They will leave at 2.45pm
after Easter.
MILK: This is a reminder that
the school receives milk
subsidised by the EEC. The milk
costs 10p a day and has to be
ordered in advance.
SCHOOL MEALS: School dinners
are increasing to £1. from
September.
GUITAR:Guitars will
recommence again in September for
P5-P7.
PANTOMIME: Following on the
success of last years trip the panto
has been booked again in the
Waterfront for the 14th December. !!
Health Week: We have been
involved in a number of health
initiatives over the past two years.
We are please to report that the
most recent communication from the
school dentists shows that we have
moved into the top half of the
dental health league table for local
schools. Two years ago we were at
the bottom!
With this and other issues in mind
such as childhood obesity and the
effects of various sweets/drinks on
concentration we have enclosed a
short letter regarding Healthy
Breaktimes. At present we have
healthy breaktimes three times per
week. We would like to gauge your
opinions on changing
this
to either 4 or 5 times per week.
Please respond using the enclosed
questionnaire.
PARENT AUDIT: Could you
please complete the enclosed audit
and return to the school before the
end of term.
Your opinions and views are
important to us as we produce our
new school development plan.
GOODBYE: It’s that time of
the year again and we say goodbye
to our Primary 7’s. We hope that
they leave St. Mary’s with lots of
happy memories and they take away
with them the values that we have
tried to share with them.
We also say goodbye to some families
as their youngest child is in P7. We
wish you well and hope that you
keep your association with the
school.

who has been working in P1 over the
past two years and we wish her well

UNIFORMS: Most of the
uniforms are here and can be
collected in the hall. There is also
a number of coats and other items of
clothing which have not been
claimed. These can also be found in
the hall.
DATE /EVENT REMINDERS
Friday 24th Prize Giving at
10am followed by an early lunch.
School closing at midday. It is also
P7’s last day at school
Thursday 30th School finishes at
11.30 -no lunch.
School reopens on Tuesday 30th
August with two training days for
all staff.
Reception and P1 children start
school on Thursday 1st September
only. They will finish at 12 and
there will be no school dinners.
They will also finish at 12 on
Friday.
The
rest of the school start on Friday
2nd September and will be a normal
day.
