OCTOBER 2003 NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents

The children have settled well back into school life.

Thank you to everyone who attended Fr Peter’s first Mass in the school in early September. The children will attend mass in the church in October. As October is the month of the rosary we will focus on this in school.

UNIFORM:
If any one needs any items of uniform please complete an order form from the office.
Uniform can only be ordered in blocks of items. An order was made recently.
Please make sure all items are labeled.

Thank you to everyone who is cooperating with children wearing the correct PE uniform. If anyone needs an item please complete an order form .

Thank You.

RECORDERS:
All children from P4 upwards require a recorder. If your child does not have a recorder they can be purchased from the school for £3. It is the custom that the school shall provide the P4’s with their own recorder.

CIRCLE TIME:
Each class is now involved in a weekly activity called Circle Time. Various issues are discussed in a fun and interesting way. Ask your children about the activity!

POND ATTEMPT 3:.
2 or 3 pairs of strong hands are required for an hours work some evening/Saturday to try and reassemble the pond after 2 failed attempts. It is going to cost £350 to employ someone to do the job. Hopefully we can avoid this by doing it ourselves. If anyone is interested please let the office know.

Thank You.

BARNARDO’S:
There will be a visit from the charity Barnardo’s on Friday 10th.

The children will be asked to do a little fund raising later in the term.

HOLIDAY DATES:
The school will be closed on Thursday 30th October and Friday 31st October for Hallowe’en.

CHRISTMAS SHOE BOXES:
Following on the success of last year we are involving ourselves again with the Samaritans Purse charity that collects and provides shoeboxes that contain presents for Eastern European children at Christmas time. When one considers how much Western European children receive it would be nice to be able to help the less well off.

Leaflets will be sent home shortly explaining everything.

FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL QUIZ NIGHT:
A reminder that the first social night, a quiz, organised for the year will take place in The Halfway House on Friday 7th November.

The Annual Raffle will also take place that night. As this is one of the main fund raisers for the year we hope that there will be a good attendance.

ANNUAL RAFFLE:
The annual raffle will take place on the night of the quiz.
Tickets are £1 each or a book of 6 for £5.

The prizes are good and we request your help in this venture. Tickets will be sent home this week.

If each family can sell 2 books we will raise around .£500.

Please return the money when the tickets are sold.

There are extra tickets for those that need them.

PHOTOGRAPHS:
Photographs have been issued.

Please send the correct money with the order if you wish to purchase the photos.

Thank you.

SCHOOL REUNION:
There is a school reunion of former pupils in AOH on 24th October.

Enjoy the night.

WEBSITE:
The school has just launched its own website on the internet. This is a first for the school and is an exciting development The object of the site is to provide an up to date platform for the school and wider community.

Newsletters, photos of children's work, school brochure, trips etc will be available to view.

The address is: www.stmaryspsglasdrumman.com.

CHRISTMAS ORDERS:
Please don’t buy any Christmas cards etc just yet. We are sending out catalogues from a company called Webb Ivory who sell everything to do with Christmas except the turkey. Their prices are competitive and the products are of good quality. Ordering is done through the school and the school receives 25% commission on all orders.

It is a good fundraiser for the school and you save your feet walking round the shops.

The catalogues will be sent out shortly.

HEALTHY EATING:
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are Healthy Eating breaktime days. Fruit, water and milk should only be taken on those mornings.

Last year we moved of the bottom of the league table for dental decay for local primary schools in Mourne. Hopefully we can move further up this year.
