The school
is situated
in the hamlet of Glasdrumman, about
one mile north of Annalong on the
main Kilkeel -Newcastle Road (A2).
The school is in a beautiful
location with the Irish Sea and the
Mourne Mountains as its neighbours.
Around 1790
the first school was established in
the area – a “Hedge School” beside
Spence’s River. In later years
“Kildare St Society’ schools were
built in Mullartown and beside the
Bloody Bridge. Glasdrumman National
School was built at the rear of the
church in 1855 and served the parish
for over 100 years.
The
present school was opened in 1969
and includes five classrooms, office
and a large hall for PE, drama,
music and assemblies. Recently there
has seen the development of a new
office, staffroom, toilet and
entrance.
The school
boasts beautiful grounds, which lend
themselves to environmental studies
and include a large sports field
which has recently been redeveloped
following a grant from the Big
Lottery and a large playground. Each
classroom is well resourced with
Interactive Smart Boards in each
room and computer workstations and
laptops have recently been added.
The school has four classes and
children are placed in classes
according to their age i.e.
Reception / P1, P2 / P3, P4 / P5,
and P6/ P7. St Mary’s Primary School
is a Maintained school for children
between the ages of four and eleven.
We are in
the Parish of Lower Mourne and we
have close links with St Mary’s
church, which is a short walk away
from us. We also have strong links
with Glasdrumman Gaelic Athletic
Club, our local football club.
If you wish
your child to start school, please
try to register your child with us
as soon as possible. This enables us
to plan ahead. An application form
can be obtained from the school.
The ethos of the school can be best
summed up with the school's motto:
"SHARING THE CARING"
